Dr. Moritz Baumgärtel is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance of Utrecht University and at University College Roosevelt, as well as a fellow of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights. He holds a PhD in law from the Université libre de Bruxelles as well as postgraduate degrees from Utrecht University and the University of Cambridge. He has previously worked as a lecturer at Tilburg Law School.
As a senior researcher of the ‘Cities of Refuge’ research project, Baumgärtel is currently focusing on the international legal obligations and policy initiatives of cities and their local governments in the migration domain. His monograph Demanding Rights: Europe’s Supranational Courts and the Dilemma of Migrant Vulnerability was published by Cambridge University Press in May 2019.
