Working together to deliver Sustainable Development Goals at EU and global level

Location: Despachantes, Alfandega
Date: Fri, January 31
Time: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

With this session, UN-Habitat proposes a workshop on the local implementation of the SDGs.  The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the indivisible 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.

Global sustainability is an extremely complex agenda that challenges the capacity of European institutions, countries, regions and cities in achieving effective collaboration between all relevant actors. Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in the European Union requires an alignment of strategies touching upon issues as diverse as social cohesion, territorial development, economic growth, demographic changes, environmental protection and cultural identity.

This session will examine how this global agenda can be localized to the specificities of the European Union through multi-level governance and multi-stakeholder partnerships. It will allow participants to reflect on the most effective approaches to address this complexity, and to hear how cities are positioning themselves in global agendas.

Examples will be showcased on how cities, regions and countries work jointly on locally achieving the SDGs in the framework of the International Urban Cooperation Programme; how cities can effectively address the 2030 Agenda by intervening on public space from multiple entry points, multiple actors and an accumulation of small interventions over long periods of time; how cities, regions and countries can use the 169 indicators as a powerful inspiration and mobilization mechanism; and how interventions on the governance of urban design can structurally contribute to achieve a more sustainable built environment.
