Working corner: The EU Green City Accord: Cities becoming leaders for the environment

Location: Pillar Hall, Alfandega
Date: Fri, January 31
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:20 AM

  • To present an outline of the EU Green City Accord and explain the link with the European Green Deal;
  • To gather first-hand expertise from city representatives on the challenges they face in implementing the EU’s environmental directives (namely on air, noise, waste, water and nature/biodiversity);
  • To jointly explore how a European-wide cities campaign for action in these areas could be designed to enhance local development and lead to greater sustainability.

This working corner meeting will be the first open gathering for city representatives on the EU Green City Accord.

The Green City Accord is a new initiative of the European Commission to accelerate the implementation of the environmental directives in the areas of air quality; water and waste water; waste; noise; and biodiversity and nature. The Accord will be developed in coordination with city experts and launched during the course of 2020.

The aim of the new initiative is to mobilise cities that are ready to become environmental leaders. In order to participate in the initiative, cities would publicly announce their commitment to taking further action in the above-mentioned fields.

In this working corner meeting, city delegates will be invited to share their insights and perspectives on the main challenges they face in addressing environmental concerns at city level. The meeting will inform the development of the Green City Accord process in the months ahead.

The meeting is organised by ICLEI, EUROCITIES and CEMR.
