The European Commission is working together with cities to ensure a good quality of life and to help them grow sustainably through sharing knowledge, funding, and other urban policies and initiatives. The Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) is responsible for EU policy on regions and cities, and is a major contributor to sustainable urban development via the cohesion policy funds. Cohesion policy invests in more than 900 integrated and sustainable urban development strategies in all Member States, supports participatory approaches for local communities and urban-rural partnerships, and provides support to capacity building and experimentation.

DG REGIO is also coordinating the various urban initiatives within the Commission services, and actively involved in the implementation of the Urban Agenda for the EU. In doing so, it provides policy expertise and technical support to partnerships, and most recently, carried out an assessment on the implementation and performance of the Urban Agenda for the EU.

The activities of DG REGIO is also contributing to global agendas such as the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda, for example by its voluntary commitments to develop a global, people-based definition of cities and settlements, and to support international urban cooperation.
